The functions of vertical mills are also diversified. At first, the vertical mill only has the function of grinding, but later, in order to meet the need of raw material preparation in dry cement plant, the vertical mill also has the function of drying. The waste gas from kiln tail can be used as heat source and fed into the mill to make the material dry while grinding. This makes it an air-swept vertical mill and a tail-lift circulating ball mill. Due to the highly dispersed material in the mill, exposed and suspended in the hot air, the heat exchange of the vertical mill proceeds very quickly. The moisture of the material evaporates very quickly and can be dried instantaneously.

Because the tube mill has a long simplified body, the grain size of the material has changed greatly from the feeding end to the unloading end. In order to adapt to the change of material size and optimize the grinding conditions, materials of various size ranges must be grinded with grinding media of different sizes. Therefore, people divide the simplified body into two or several warehouses with partition boards, which is a multi-warehouse tube mill. The first silo of the vertical mill with drying function is the drying silo, which is usually a double silo vertical mill.

The average size of the grinding medium in each bin of the mill should be reduced in order to conform to the change of the particle size of the material in the mill. So the grinding medium of the second bin (usually the last bin) of the tube mill is the outline section. Because the contact between steel section and steel section and material particles is linear contact, there are many more contact points than the point contact between steel ball and steel ball and material, which can produce more grinding effect on material particles and is conducive to the grinding of fine particles.
